And he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God.
Acts 19:8 ESV
The length of the passage you choose affects how much time the study takes. Some passages take longer to study. This isn’t a bad thing, but you need to keep it in mind. Generally, try to keep your passages between 10 and 1 verses.
In the ‘Scripture’ column, write the passage: word-for-word. This takes time but you control how much time by choosing smaller chunks of Scripture. Break larger passages into several sections, spread out over several days. What is most important, however, is this – when you copy a passage word-for-word you actually read it through several (about five to seven) times. It is a form of forced meditation for those of us who can’t sit and think about a passage without losing focus. This process also keeps us from skimming familiar passages. When you write it out you have to think about every word.
My Own Words
To summarize the process:
- Write the passage word-for-word in column
- Write the passage in your own words in column
- List the actions you must take to obey this passage in column
- Share what you learned with other believers for accountability.
Create discussion opportunities with not-yet-believers. Share with people who are interested.
The Process of a Church Planting Movement centers around the 3 column study and the Discovery Bible Studies.
The Discovery Bible Study is not preaching or teaching, but a Bible study discussion. This means that Scripture is the authority for the group. The church planter from outside should only lead the first one or two studies.
Personal D.B.S. should be the lifestyle of every Church Planter. So begin to do 3 column studies as your personal devotion. Obedience to God through obedience to the Word must be genuine. The Church Planter learns to share this with another person and ask them to share with someone else. This is how a Church Planting Movement gets started.
And YES . . . It Can Start With You!

Below are resources that will help you prepare to lead a Discovery Bible Study. After you find the man of peace you guide them and their family through Discovering God Bible Studies. These studies introduce people to God and guide them to falling in love with Him. These resources are designed to help you with the process.
The most important parts of these resources are the Scripture lists. The Scripture lists are a collection of narratives from the Bible designed to help people learn about God through studying Creation, the Fall, and Redemption.

Contagious Disciple Making
It is hard to deny that today’s world can seem apathetic toward Christians. Some may look down at their iPhones when we mention God, motion for the check when we bring up church, or casually change the subject when we talk about prayer. In a world full of people whose indifference is greater than their desire to know Christ, how can we dream of growing the church?
